Reply Hay meadows and other species rich grasslands once made up a large part of the landscape in the UK and played a vital role in our natural and cultural heritage. What remains has become increasingly rare and fragmented so it is really important we maintain and revive the grasslands we have left. Cattle at Lanlay meadows near Cardiff Looking after these meadows involves no chemical inputs, e. As the cattle graze across the landscape, they create a mosaic of different sward lengths, bare ground and micro habitats.
This all contributes to maximising the potential for biodiversity on a grazed site. Trampling creates areas of bare ground, which is beneficial in moderation. It creates nurseries for seedlings that might not otherwise survive and habitats and hunting grounds for warmth-loving invertebrates and reptiles. Dung creates a whole ecosystem by itself. A range of wildlife move into a cowpat to set up home — more than species of insect are found in or on cattle dung in the UK and these in turn provide food for birds, badgers, foxes and bats.
As part of my role I manage three sites, all of which have hay meadows and rhos pasture wet meadows among other grassland habitats that are of high nature value.
Monday, 27 August Another Week in Wales: Day One Long-term readers of TheWriting Greyhound may remember my travelogue of last summer’s holiday, where my partner and I did a tour of mid and south Wales. We started in Aberystwyth and over the course of the week, worked our way down along the Pembrokeshire coast before heading back up through the Brecon Beacons. Since we both enjoyed last year’s week in Wales so much, we decided to complete our Welsh adventure this year by touring the north of the country.
From the rugged coastline of North Wales to the island of Anglesey and the dizzying heights of Snowdonia, this is the story of our second week in Wales. Although so much has changed in the last year, it simultaneously felt like both everything and nothing had changed as we set off on our holiday.

Keep walking straight ahead to drop down a narrow path to a concrete bridge across an outflow. Cross the bridge and climb up on to the bank opposite where you bear left to walk along the top of the bank. This will take you to a gate that leads out on to open moorland. Follow the clear track up, with the forest to your left, and then climb steeply up a stony gully to the top of the escarpment. You’ll eventually drop into a distinct saddle with the flat-topped summit of Corn Du directly ahead.

But despite soldiers arriving at checkpoints with their eyes rolling back in their heads, the march continued.
